Trigram Robot SUMO è condotto in un formato a squadre, con ogni squadra composta da 2 studenti partecipanti e 1-2 insegnanti di coaching. Ci sono due categorie: scuola primaria e scuola secondaria. Gli studenti partecipanti devono essere iscritti alla scuola primaria o secondaria il giorno della competizione. L'arena di gara è una piattaforma circolare con un diametro di 2,8 metri. La piattaforma si trova a circa 35 centimetri dal suolo e l'area di partenza del robot è di forma trapezoidale situata a 50 centimetri dal bordo. L'area all'interno della linea di preparazione fino al bordo della piattaforma è l'area di partenza per i robot, con i robot di ogni squadra posizionati uno di fronte all'altro in quest'area.
